There are places in the world that feel like they were designed for celebration. The Amalfi Coast is one of them. Dramatic cliffs plunging into water so blue it seems almost impossible, whitewashed villages clinging to hillsides above the sea, the scent of lemon groves drifting through warm afternoon air — this is a coastline that has been stopping people in their tracks for centuries. It stopped us too.
We visited the Amalfi Coast to celebrate my husband’s 50th birthday, a milestone that deserved something extraordinary. And Italy, as it always does, delivered. From the charming streets of Sorrento to the glamour of Capri to the cliffside serenity of Praiano, every stop on this coast felt like it was designed to make you feel that life is extraordinarily beautiful and that you are very lucky to be living it. If you have a milestone on the horizon, here is why the Amalfi Coast should be at the top of your list.

Sorrento is where most Amalfi Coast journeys begin, and for good reason. Perched on the cliffs above the Bay of Naples, this charming town sets the tone beautifully. Lemon groves perfuming every street, an energy that is lively without ever feeling overwhelming, and artisan workshops tucked down every side street. It is the kind of place where you wander without a plan and find something delightful around every corner.
Sorrento is also the ideal base for a day trip to Pompeii — one of the most extraordinary historic sites in the world. Walking through a Roman city frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD is an experience that defies adequate description. The scale, the detail, the intimacy of everyday life preserved across two thousand years — it is genuinely awe-inspiring. Skip-the-line tickets are essential, and a private guide makes the experience exponentially richer. Plan to spend a half-day here and return to Sorrento for a long, unhurried lunch.
For accommodation, Sorrento has three properties I recommend with great confidence. Ara Maris is a 5-star luxury hotel in the center of Sorrento where light, contemporary design, and Mediterranean nature come together — a tranquil pool surrounded by lemon trees, a rooftop sky lounge with panoramic views of the Gulf of Naples, and a restaurant guided by a Michelin-starred chef that is reason enough to linger over dinner. Hotel Mediterraneo is a beautifully positioned cliffside property with a private lift to the beach, a rooftop Vista Sky Bar, and a heritage that spans four generations of family ownership. Recently recognized by Forbes Travel Guide and welcomed as a preferred hotel partner, it is a property I recommend with particular enthusiasm. The Bellevue Syrene rounds out the trio — an intimate cliffside hotel with a private beach and the kind of refined, unhurried elegance that makes it a perennial favorite for couples and milestone travelers.
Worth Knowing: The leather sandal workshops of Sorrento are not to be missed — handcrafted and fitted to order in tiny workshops tucked off the main street, they are one of the great artisan discoveries of the Amalfi Coast. Allow time to wander and find your pair.

No destination on the Amalfi Coast is more photographed than Positano — and standing before those cascading pastel houses tumbling down to the sea, you understand completely why. It is extraordinarily beautiful in a way that almost feels theatrical. The narrow lanes wind past boutiques selling hand-painted ceramics and flowing linen dresses, the beach clubs buzz with the confident ease of people who know they are somewhere very special, and the light at golden hour turns the whole town into something out of a painting.
Positano rewards travelers who go beyond the obvious — and nothing does that more completely than a private boat charter. For us, a full afternoon on the Tyrrhenian Sea — drifting past hidden coves, ducking into sea caves, and watching this extraordinary coastline reveal itself from the water — was the kind of experience that becomes permanently part of your travel story. I consider it non-negotiable on any Amalfi Coast itinerary. You will not regret it.
For those who want to experience the coast on foot, the Path of the Gods is one of the most celebrated hikes in Italy. The classic route begins in Bomerano in the village of Agerola, offering a gentle descent with panoramic views of Positano and Capri that unfold as you walk. The trail passes ancient terraces, olive groves, and wild rosemary before reaching the small hamlet of Nocelle. Start early to beat the midday heat and the crowds. I recommend arranging private transport and a guide — the logistics of getting to the trailhead are best handled by someone who knows the coast well.
For accommodation in Positano, three properties stand out. Le Sirenuse is the undisputed icon — an 18th-century palazzo beloved by generations of discerning travelers, perfectly positioned in the heart of town. Villa Treville reimagines the standard for luxury, spread across a sprawling cliffside estate with private beach access and lush Mediterranean gardens. And for those who want the most extraordinary experience on the coast, Il San Pietro di Positano is in a category entirely its own — carved into the cliffs above the sea, with a Michelin-starred restaurant, a private beach reached by elevator through the rock, and what is arguably one of the most scenic tennis courts in the world, nestled between the cliff face and the sea. As a fellow tennis enthusiast, that detail alone makes it a personal favorite. All three are properties where I can extend exclusive preferred partner perks to clients who book through me.

The town of Amalfi itself is the historic heart of the coast — a medieval maritime republic that once rivaled Venice and Genoa as a trading power. Today its streets are wonderfully atmospheric, the Duomo di Amalfi rising dramatically above the main piazza in a way that stops you in your tracks every time you round the corner and see it. The Cloister of Paradise beside the cathedral is one of the most beautiful small spaces in southern Italy — serene, ancient, and remarkably unchanged.
With a ferry port and convenient connections along the coast, Amalfi town makes an excellent base for exploring neighboring towns and islands. The town transforms at night — once the day-trippers depart, the locals come out, and the Piazza del Duomo becomes magical and relaxed. Staying overnight here gives you access to a version of Amalfi that most visitors never see.
For accommodation, three properties stand out. Borgo Santandrea is perched high above the Mediterranean — a beautifully designed boutique property with a private beach, Michelin-recognized dining, and the kind of intimate, family warmth atmosphere that makes guests come back year after year. The Anantara Convento di Amalfi Grand Hotel is one of the most extraordinary stays on the entire coast — a 13th-century monastery built into the cliffside, with original cloisters and a preserved chapel alongside completely renovated rooms and panoramic sea views. It is history and luxury in complete harmony. And Hotel Santa Caterina is the grand dame of Amalfi — a secluded clifftop property with an elevator that drops you directly to a private beach club and saltwater pool, and a timeless elegance that has made it one of the most beloved properties on the coast. All three are properties where I can extend exclusive preferred partner perks to clients.
Worth Knowing: A private cooking class in Amalfi or the surrounding hills is one of the most wonderful ways to spend a morning here. Learning to make fresh pasta, handmade limoncello, or traditional Campanian dishes from a local family is the kind of experience that connects you to a place in a way that sightseeing alone never quite achieves. And if you’re looking for a quieter base from which to experience the best of the coast, consider staying in nearby Praiano at Casa Angelina — a sleek, cliffside boutique retreat that offers a serene sanctuary to return to after a day spent exploring the buzz of Amalfi, Positano, and beyond. It is one of my personal favorites on the coast.
If Positano is the jewel and Amalfi is the heart, Ravello is the soul. Perched 365 meters above the coastline, it is quieter, more aristocratic, and offers the best views in the entire region. Artists and composers have been drawn here for centuries and the town still carries a quiet, contemplative elegance that feels like a world apart from the bustle below. For couples seeking a romantic retreat, there is nowhere on the Amalfi Coast that comes close — the combination of elevation, stillness, and sheer beauty creates an atmosphere that is genuinely unlike anywhere else in Italy.
The famous gardens of Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo are among the most extraordinary in Italy, their terraces hanging above the sea with views that make the rest of the world feel very far away. Ravello is home to some of the most extraordinary luxury hotels on the entire coast — historic palaces turned 5-star icons, cliffside infinity pools that defy gravity, and dining with panoramas you’ll never forget. Palazzo Avino, known as the Pink Palace, is a 12th-century villa turned 5-star hotel that is the epitome of Ravello glamour, with Michelin-starred dining and a private beach club accessed by shuttle. The Belmond Hotel Caruso is equally extraordinary — an 11th-century palace at the very top of Ravello with one of the most celebrated infinity pools in the world.
Ravello is particularly magnificent for milestone celebrations — there is something about the elevation, the quiet, and the sheer beauty of the views that makes any occasion feel significant and worthy of remembrance.

No Amalfi Coast milestone trip is complete without a day on Capri. The island has a reputation for glamour that is entirely deserved — boutiques and restaurants lining the Piazzetta, designer labels competing with artisan ceramicists, and the impossibly blue water that makes every photograph look like it has been filtered.
One of the most iconic experiences on the island is La Fontelina beach club, a legendary spot accessible only by boat or a considerable number of steps, nestled at the base of dramatic cliffs with crystal clear turquoise water and an effortlessly chic atmosphere. Arriving by boat is the only way to do it — stepping off onto the dock with the Faraglioni rocks rising from the sea and a Campari Spritz waiting is the kind of arrival that feels like a scene from a film. We did it and we were so glad we did.
The Seggiovia Monte Solaro — a single-person open-air chairlift that carries you to the summit of Capri’s highest point — is one of those simple, extraordinary experiences that delivers far more than its modest price suggests. It offers panoramic views of the Gulf of Naples and the Amalfi Coast that are genuinely breathtaking. We hiked up for the exercise and took the chairlift back down — drifting slowly over the island with the entire coast spread out below us. It is one of my favorite memories from the entire trip.
The Capri Palace Jumeirah in Anacapri is my top recommendation for where to stay on Capri — beautifully positioned away from the crowds of Capri town, with exceptional service and some of the finest dining on the island. As a preferred partner property, I’m able to extend exclusive preferred partner perks to clients — making an already extraordinary stay even more special.
Worth Knowing: Capri is at its most magical in the evenings, when the day visitors depart and the island returns to itself. If you can stay overnight, do. If not, arrive early and stay as late as the last ferry allows.
The Amalfi Coast does something to people. It slows them down, opens their eyes, and reminds them that life is meant to be savored. The long lunches that stretch into afternoon, the private boat drifting past sea caves and hidden coves, the sunset from a cliffside terrace with a glass of something cold and local — these are the moments that a milestone celebration should be made of.
My husband’s 50th birthday on this coast was everything a milestone trip should be — extraordinary, unhurried, and full of the kind of moments that you find yourself describing to people months later with a smile you can’t quite contain. That is what the Amalfi Coast does. And it is why, when someone comes to me with a milestone to celebrate, this is one of the first places I think of.
